The Tooth That Wasn't Hers

The tooth was in the bathroom sink after the woman had finished brushing her teeth.

There was nothing particularly unusual about finding something in a sink after brushing. A small object can be easy to overlook among water, toothpaste and the ordinary clutter of a bathroom. This object, however, was unmistakably a tooth.

Her first thought was that it belonged to her. She had just been brushing her teeth, so the simplest explanation seemed to be that she had somehow lost one without noticing.

Then she looked more closely.

She could not remember having a loose tooth, and she had not felt one come out while brushing. Instead of throwing it away, she decided to find out whether the tooth really had come from her mouth.

She took the tooth to a dentist.

That decision turned an ordinary household discovery into something considerably harder to explain. The dentist examined the tooth and said it appeared to belong to an older person because of the amount of wear visible on it.

The assessment did not identify an owner. It only made the original assumption less convincing.

If the tooth did not appear to be hers, another obvious possibility was her husband.

The couple checked that possibility too.

Her husband said the tooth was not his. That left them with a small but very specific problem: a human tooth had appeared in their bathroom sink, yet neither person in the household recognised it as their own.

The apparent age of the tooth made the discovery stranger. The dentist said that it appeared to have belonged to someone older, but there was no identification attached to it.

There was also no documented explanation for how a tooth belonging to another person could have ended up in the sink.

The circumstances of the home became part of the mystery.

The couple lived alone and had not had guests for several weeks. That removed the most straightforward explanation that immediately comes to mind when an unfamiliar personal object appears inside a home.

There was no named visitor whose missing tooth could be checked against the object. No friend or relative was identified as having lost a tooth in the bathroom. The couple had no known visitor who had entered the house and later reported a missing tooth.

Instead, the tooth was simply there.
