The Man Who Forgave the Killer Who Took His Wife

Leo Schofield walked out of Everglades Correctional Institution on April 30, 2024, after more than 36 years behind bars for the murder of his first wife, Michelle.

He had maintained his innocence throughout the imprisonment. By then, another man's name had been attached to evidence from the case for years.

Michelle Schofield was 18 when she disappeared in February 1987 in Polk County, Florida. Her car was later found abandoned, and her body was discovered in a drainage canal.

Leo was arrested in June 1988. A jury convicted him in 1989, and he received a life sentence.

Unknown fingerprints found inside Michelle's car eventually became part of the fight over the conviction. In 2004, testing matched the prints to Jeremy Scott, who was already serving a life sentence for another murder.

Scott lived near the area where Michelle's body was found. Investigators interviewed him in 2005, and he denied involvement in Michelle's death at that time.

Years later, Leo's legal team returned to Scott. During an interview in 2017, Scott testified that he had killed Michelle.

His account became part of hearings over whether Leo should receive a new trial. The court rejected the request, with questions raised about parts of Scott's account and his earlier denials.

The case later reached a much wider audience through the Bone Valley podcast. Its reporting examined the evidence, the original investigation and the attempts to challenge Leo's conviction.

Leo remained in prison while his legal team continued seeking a way to overturn the conviction.

In April 2024, the Florida Commission on Offender Review granted Leo parole. He left Everglades Correctional Institution on April 30 after serving more than 36 years.

His release came with conditions that included residence in a halfway house, supervision and restrictions on contact with Michelle's family. The murder conviction itself remained in place.

Life outside prison brought changes that had accumulated during the decades Leo spent inside. His son had grown into adulthood. Technology and ordinary routines had also moved far beyond the world Leo had known when he entered prison.

Leo continued speaking publicly about Michelle and the effort to clear his name.

Then, in early 2025, Leo and his daughter Ashley were involved in a serious motorcycle accident. While Leo was recovering, Gilbert King, who had investigated the case for Bone Valley, received a call from Jeremy Scott.

Scott was still in prison. He had continued to maintain that he was responsible for Michelle's murder.

King arranged a conversation between Leo and Scott. The call brought together the man who had spent decades imprisoned for Michelle's murder and the prisoner whose confession had become central to Leo's fight for a new trial.

Leo told Scott that he was grateful for the confession and then said he forgave him.

Scott responded that he regretted what had happened. Leo told him to keep doing what was right.
